Is it safe to test your webcam and mic online?

Short answer: yes, when the test runs in your browser and never uploads your video — which is how VideoCallTest works. Here's how to check any site, and how to stay in control.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Camera

Click the button and choose Allow when your browser asks to use the camera.

How VideoCallTest handles your camera and mic

  • Runs in your browser. The picture and sound are analyzed on your device. There is no upload and no server processing.
  • Nothing is recorded by us. The optional 5-second clip and any photo exist only in your browser's memory so you can play or save them, and are gone when you leave the page.
  • You're in control. Click Stop or close the tab and the camera light goes off.
  • No account. There's nothing to sign up for. See our privacy policy.

Can websites use your camera without asking?

No. Every modern browser — Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox — asks for permission before a site can use your camera or microphone, and only allows it on secure https pages. A site can't use your camera until you've clicked Allow, and once allowed it can only use the camera while its tab is open — the indicator light and the browser's camera icon always show when it does. If you'd rather be asked every time, set the permission back to Ask.

How to tell your camera is on

  • The camera's indicator light turns on (almost all built-in cameras light up whenever they're active).
  • The browser shows a camera or red recording icon in the tab or address bar.
  • Mac and iPhone show a green dot (camera) or orange dot (microphone) at the top of the screen.
  • Windows shows a microphone icon in the taskbar while the mic is in use. For the camera, open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera → Recent activity.

How to remove camera access

  1. Click the site-information icon (a lock, sliders or camera icon) next to the site's address.
  2. Set Camera and Microphone to Ask or Block.
  3. To review all sites: Chrome Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings; Safari Settings → Websites → Camera.

How to judge any webcam test site

  • It should explain that the test runs locally and doesn't upload video.
  • It should work without an account and without installing anything.
  • It should use https and only ask for permission when you click a test button.
  • Be careful with sites that ask you to download software just to test a camera.
