Check your mic before Discord
- Click Test my microphone, allow access and talk. The meter should move.
- Click Record 5 seconds, speak as you would in voice chat, then play it back.
- Fix anything the recording check flags: too quiet, clipping, or background noise.
Set up Discord to use the same mic
- Discord → User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Set Input Device to the microphone that worked here (not "Default" if you have several).
- Adjust Input Volume, then use Discord's Mic Test → Let's Check.
Discord mic cutting out
Discord only sends sound above the input sensitivity threshold. If the start or end of your words disappears, turn off Automatically determine input sensitivity and drag the slider left, or use Push to Talk.
Discord mic sounds bad or robotic
- Clipping: lower the input volume until the recording check shows no clipping.
- Bluetooth headset: using the mic switches many headsets to a low-quality mode — a wired headset or USB mic sounds much better.
- Too much processing: try turning Discord's Noise Suppression off and on to compare.
Nobody can hear you
- Check for the red crossed-out mic (self-mute) or server mute.
- Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → allow desktop apps. Mac: allow Discord in Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- If the meter here doesn't move either, see microphone not working.
