Webcam and mic test for online exams

Test in the same browser and on the same computer you'll use for the exam. Aim for a clear, well-lit face and a microphone meter that moves when you speak.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Camera

Click the button and choose Allow when your browser asks to use the camera.

Microphone

Pre-exam checklist

  1. Camera works: you can see yourself above and the picture quality check is green.
  2. Lighting: face a window or lamp so your face is clearly visible — proctoring tools flag faces they can't see.
  3. Framing: turn on the framing grid. Keep your whole face and shoulders in view, eyes near the top third line.
  4. Microphone works: the meter moves; record 5 seconds and check background noise is low.
  5. Close other apps that use the camera or mic (Zoom, Teams, Discord, other tabs).
  6. Plug in your laptop and use a stable internet connection.
  7. Do a final check with your exam provider's own system check if they have one.

If your camera isn't detected

  • Allow camera access for your browser (site-information icon in the address bar) and in system settings — Windows: Privacy & security → Camera; Mac: Privacy & Security → Camera, or Safari → Settings → Websites → Camera.
  • Restart the computer before the exam so no other app is holding the camera.
  • See camera not working for detailed fixes.

Look clear on camera

A dark or grainy picture is the most common problem. Add light in front of you and wipe the lens — see why your webcam is dark or grainy.

Use a quiet room

Many exams monitor sound. Record a clip in the mic test: if background noise shows as high, close windows, turn off fans and ask others to keep quiet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my webcam for an online exam?

Run the camera and mic test above in the same browser you will use for the exam. Make sure your face is clearly visible, the lighting check is green, and the microphone meter moves when you speak.

What camera do I need for a proctored exam?

Most proctoring services need a working webcam (720p is plenty), a microphone, and a stable connection. Many require a laptop or desktop camera rather than a phone.

Why does the proctoring software not detect my camera?

Close every other app that uses the camera, allow the browser or proctoring app in your system privacy settings, and restart the computer before the exam.

Does this test record me?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. It only checks that your camera and microphone work.
