Before a Google Meet call
- Run the test above and fix any lighting or sound tips.
- Open the Meet link. In the green room, check the preview and click the three dots → Settings.
- Under Audio and Video, choose the same microphone, speaker and camera that worked here.
- Use Check your audio and video for Meet's own quick check.
Camera or mic blocked in Meet
- Click the camera icon in the address bar on meet.google.com and choose Allow.
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera / Microphone — make sure meet.google.com isn't blocked.
- Mac: allow your browser in System Settings → Privacy & Security (Safari: Safari → Settings → Websites); Windows: allow desktop apps in Settings → Privacy & security.
Camera "in use" in Meet
Close Zoom, Teams, the Camera app and other tabs that use the camera, then reload the Meet tab. If the camera still can't start here either, follow camera not working.
Sound better in Meet
Record 5 seconds in the mic test. If background noise is high, turn on Meet's noise cancellation (Settings → Audio, if your account has it) and use a headset.
Meet settings worth knowing
- Settings → Video → Send resolution: raise it to 720p if your picture looks soft to others and your connection is good.
- Companion mode joins without camera or mic — handy in a meeting room, but don't pick it by accident when you want to be seen.
